My first teaching job was in a two-room schoolhouse on Great Cranberry Island. Since then I have had the good fortune to explore, live and work on many Maine islands with my family and dogs. Those experiences are brought to life in Bear and the Oxbow Island Gang.

In small towns and on islands there is an interdependence that breaks down generational barriers. Every member of the community is important. Children have more responsibilities but they also get to have many of the freedoms of their grandparents' childhoods: exploring independently without the safety concerns that haunt so many childhoods these days.

Bear and the Oxbow Island Gang is an environmental mystery for readers ages 8-11. This is intended to be the first book in a series that follows Bear through his sixth grade school year.
